I just heard last week that "Cobblestones", a piece based on my visit to Rome in 2019 (remember when we could visit other countries???) has been accepted into the Northwest Watercolor Society Waterworks Unlimited international juried exhibition. "Cobblestones" is among the 70 pieces selected from 423 entries by the exhibition juror, Liana Bennett. The exhibition will run online from April 22 - June 30 on the NWWS website. The painting is my impression of the late afternoon sun reflecting off the cobblestone streets near the Spanish Steps, as seen from the Viale della Trinita dei Monti, by the Villa Medici. I was struck by the silvery sheen of the cobbles putting the people into silhouette with their shapes mirrored by their deep shadows. While waiting for Spring to appear and the snow to melt, I've been going through my old slide collection and have found some inspiration in places I visited years ago, before digital photography entered my life. The first piece I've painted from that collection is "Old Abbey", my view of the interior of Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire. Again, it was the high contrast of the deep shadows against the bright sunlit stones that attracted me. Of course, I also love that soaring Gothic architecture. As I go through the slide collection, I'm finding more images that I'm adding to my to do list. Look out for more from Prague in the near future! |
