While dinner is in the oven, I thought I'd let you in on the process I followed for "Secrets" (Yes, I changed the name, too: part of the process of thinking about the work! She does look like she's mischievously hiding something from us). First I mapped in the figure and gave it some roundness with rough shading before filling the rest of the canvas with a neutral background. I got in close to the hair and body, but didn't worry too much about overpainting some of it - I knew I'd have to work the hair some more later, anyway and could just paint it on top of the background. Same with the body - while shading and rounding, I'd have to redefine some of the edges in any case. I found some geometric stencils in the studio that had intrigued me on a visit to an art store ages ago, but were still in their wrappers. They were perfect for adding texture to this piece in a quasi-pop art manner. They provide a bit of fun and mystery as they partially obscure and wrap around the figure's head. I chose a dark purple for the small, lacy stencils to contrast with the rather monochromatic hair and background colour. Finally, I layered some stencil on her arm to hide it a bit and draw attention more up to the face. I love the zig-zag rhythm that seems to give her thoughts vibrancy among the bubbles that fizz all around. She definitely has something she's keeping from us! What do you think? |
