After several revisions of Flowers IV, shrinking the size of the flowers, adding and then eliminating some of them, getting rid of the chair and changing the background colour, I came to the conclusion that it just wasn't working. So, it's recycle time! It felt really good to get the gesso out and obliterate the whole thing. Cathartic, even. I had a fresh, clean canvas for something new that I can sink my teeth into instead of trying to re-work a subject that I had just lost interest in. Perhaps some day, if my work ever comes under the scrutiny of an art historian, someone will have fun x-raying my paintings to see what lies underneath the visible layer. Some of my finished pieces have four other images hidden behind that didn't make the cut, so to speak. My trip to BC last summer and the experience of watching parts of the forest burn, smothering hillsides and towns in smoke, still demands more images documenting the event and warning us of what may well happen to much of the west. It's quite a departure from the domestic vase of flowers that lies under this scene, but feels much more urgent for me to express. This picture is its current state, after one day of painting. It'll take more hours to finish - but hours I'll be happy to devote. |
