Those of you who have been following me on Facebook and Instagram know that I've begun looking more at scenes closer to home lately instead of rural landscapes. The series of paintings of Montreal staircases that I did recently sold quickly in the Places and Spaces show at Galerie 203. I'm still interested in the shapes and the shadows that these staircases create, playing off of the brickwork of the walls. Look for more staircase paintings to come! I'm also looking at the industrial past of Montreal. There are some fascinating buildings in the Old Port and along the Lachine Canal that called to me over the last few weeks. I first saw the Canadian Malt plant last summer while visiting the St. Ambroise brewery. The view from their patio, with the afternoon sun glancing off of the towering silos and stack, was captivating. I had a good look at the Old Port grain silos while taking a break from the gallery during the Canada at 150 show last month. What a magnificent hulk! The building is so huge, with massive rusting pipes descending from the uppermost reaches, that I immediately knew I had to paint it in a more expressionistic style - |
You can see the Canadian Malt painting at Galerie 203 this weekend. I still have a tiny bit of work to do on the grain silos - if I get that done today I might take it down to the gallery as well.
Have a great weekend, everyone!
